The chart below shows the main reasons why students chose to study at a particular university in the UK in 1995 and 2005. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Introduction

The chart provides information about why students attended a British university in two different years.

Overview

Overall, it is clear that the prominent factors in both years remained academic in nature, while the most notable changes were observed in other categories.

Body paragraph 1

The most important factor for students was suitable degree courses, with 35% of respondents in 1995 and 37% in 2005 citing this as the main reason for their choice. This was followed by the quality of resources, which was chosen by 21% of students in 1995, although its popularity dropped by 4% twenty years later. In contrast, slightly more students reported quality of teaching as a major consideration in 2005 (18%) compared to 1995 (15%).

Body paragraph 2

The non-academic factors experienced greater changes over the same period. Good sports and social activities, which were originally important to 19% of students in 1995, were no longer sought after in 2005, with only 6% of students choosing this factor. This was in stark contrast to the percentage of students who chose close proximity to their parental home as the main reason for their choice of university. This percentage more than doubled, from 10% in 1995 to 22% in 2005.
