Too much money is spent maintaining and repairing old buildings. Some people think that they should be knocked down and give way to modern buildings. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Introduction
The government has been allocating an extensive amount of expenditure to the protection and restoration of historical structures. However, some claim that these old constructions should be demolished and new buildings should be erected instead. Personally, I somewhat concur with this because a nation’s economy and residents’ everyday lifestyle can benefit, although I admit that some valuable old buildings should be preserved.
Body Paragraph 1
The primary reason why I favour the government knocking down old buildings and financing modern ones is that it will exert positive influences on a country’s economic development. A greater number of job opportunities will be created around the construction industry, so the unemployment rate will decrease. Meanwhile, businesspeople can invest in new commercial districts and ordinary people can purchase residential complexes. All these can make huge contributions to the economy as taxes are levied.
Body Paragraph 2
Another point I consider relevant is that individuals’ daily life can become easier and safer. If people live in places that have been there for decades or even hundreds of years, they may have difficulty going upstairs or downstairs because no elevators have been installed. Also, smoke detectors are normally not in place, so if there is a fire, some people may not evacuate immediately and will be very likely to lose their lives in the end.

However, it is also reasonable to me that stopping maintaining and repairing historic structures is unwise. This is mainly because some of them have artistic, historical, and cultural value. If these buildings were removed, tourists would find their travel experience uninteresting, experts of different areas would be unable to do research, and younger generations could not understand the history of their hometown in person.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I partly agree that the authorities should pull down old buildings and prioritise contemporary ones. This can promote the economy and improve people’s lives. Nevertheless, I also make a concession in accepting that the government ought to strive to protect old buildings but merely to those with meaningful value.
