Students should be allowed to choose academic courses or practical courses, such as carpenters. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Introduction

University courses have long been criticised as rigid and limited in range, often failing to meet students’ interests and employment needs. Some educationalists have therefore called for greater flexibility in the programmes offered, which means college applicants can opt for practical courses if they find them more appealing than their traditional, academic counterparts. I fully support this approach for three reasons explained below.

Body Paragraph 1

The primary benefit is that picking one’s favourite subject ensures motivation, a critical factor of learning success. If gardening, bakery or any other practical skill interests them and if given systematic training, students tend to invest more time and energy than when forced to attend lectures and workshops that do not appeal to them. This internal drive and commitment naturally result in a solid grasp of the subject.

Body Paragraph 2

Another benefit of offering different types of courses is to increase students’ employment competitiveness. If most job candidates, upon graduation, were confined to knowledge of economics, finance, law or science, they would find the market oversaturated while practical work opportunities, such as bartending and construction, are more likely to be abundant and equally rewarding. Encouraging learners attracted by alternative forms of employment to pursue their interests can mean a more diverse talent pool and a greater likelihood for everyone to secure a decent job.

Conclusion

The autonomy in programme selection does not mean essential knowledge and skills are ignored. Apart from student-picked courses, common core modules are often set as compulsory. This combination ensures that students, regardless of their personal preference, command the basics of ethics, logic and other fields of intellectual pursuit and some practical skills, such as time management and digital literacy.
