Some people suggest that a country should try to produce all the food for its population and import as little food as possible. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Introduction
As a consequence of the growing population, how to feed a country’s population with enough food has become a major concern. In this picture, some people suggest that a government should try to increase its domestic output to satisfy all the food demand of its people, while at the same time cutting down the amount of imported food as much as possible. I tend to disagree with the statement, because this will not be practical.
Body Paragraph 1
Certainly, the idea of becoming fully self-sufficient in food comes out of good intention. By attempting to yield enough food for the people, a government will be able to minimize the food price in the market. Importing food, on the other hand, involves international transport charges, taxes and labor costs, and thus it is always more expensive. In addition to that, domestic productivity increase would also secure more job opportunities for a nation. This would seem significant for countries that rely on agriculture, such as India, Brazil and Mexico.
Body Paragraph 2
However, ensuring adequate food for the whole population would be impractical, if not impossible, for every country in the world. Due to geographical location and weather condition, many countries simply cannot achieve this. There is a long list of countries that do not have sufficient arable land to grow crops for food, which includes Singapore, Bahamas, Suriname, Canada and a number of nations situated in the desert. Take Greenland as an example. Agriculture in this nation is largely discouraged by the glaciers and other forms of ice that cover most of the island, leaving the country with only less than 1% of land used for food production. People living in these areas will always have to depend on a certain amount of food importation.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I believe a country should not require itself to produce all the food and put restriction on imported products, because being self-sufficient is arguably not a rational goal. In a globalized world, countries will invariably rely on each other in terms of food supply.
