Introduction

For decades, there has been a search for the root cause of crime, giving rise to different ideas and proposals. While some people may point to economic and social factors as the main culprits, others suggest certain genetic traits can predispose a person to criminal behaviour.

Body Paragraph 1

Environmental factors do have an effect on offenders and the logic is self-evident. Individuals who grow up and live in disadvantaged circumstances are more frequently exposed to criminogenic settings and could develop a propensity for crime. For example, young people who experience or witness violence and physical abuse within their families are likely to hurt others in the same way. Additionally, low socioeconomic status and an unstable neighborhood mean a lower likelihood of receiving proper education both from family and school, which in turn translates to a lower possibility of acquiring stable employment for income. Therefore, people lacking social and economic resources may resort to theft or robbery to survive. Poverty, in particular, has been shown to have a well-established link to crime.

Body Paragraph 2

On the other hand, others support the idea that crime results from inherited traits or particular genes, suggesting that some people are born criminals. This proposal can be exemplified by many notorious violent crimes committed by individuals with severe mental disorders such as psychopathy and difficult temperament. These individuals are often more aggressive, sensation-seeking, and less sociable, traits that are part of their personality determined by genetics. However, it is the interaction of traits and the environment that shapes a person, and a particular trait does not necessarily manifest in those who carry the gene. Furthermore, it is challenging to determine whether it is the gene or the environment in which a person lives that contributes to this personality. Therefore, simply concluding that some people are inherently evil is arbitrary and unreasonable.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the causes of crime are entangled with both biological and circumstantial factors, and it would be unwise to disregard either of them. However, while people may be genetically predisposed to certain behaviors, the development of negative behavior likely requires some sort of catalyst. In light of this, I believe circumstances play a more significant role in crime.
