Some cities have vehicle-free days, when private cars, trucks, and motorcycles are banned in the city center. People are encouraged to use public transportation like buses, taxis and metros. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Introduction
Traffic and pollution resulting from vehicles have affected people throughout the world. With cities suffering from heavy smog and endless congestion, governments are eager to reduce the large number of automobiles on the road every day, and one way is to set vehicle-free days, which is to ban private cars and suggest citizens to take public transports instead.
Body Paragraph 1
The advocates of this policy propose that it contributes to mitigating emissions and alleviating traffic congestion in cities. It sounds like an easy math problem: if there was one day per month when a city was closed to private cars, for example, the amount of greenhouse gas emitted from those vehicles could be reduced by roughly 3.3% in total, and if it was on a weekly basis, the figure would go up to over 10%. Furthermore, it could also eliminate the concerns related to gridlock and parking availability. However, when putting into practice, the policy may not be as effective as it promises, as the canceled trips by private car owners may just be scheduled on another day instead of being replaced by bus journeys, so its contribution to carbon mitigation and traffic congestion may be much smaller than expected.

On the other hand, it is very likely that the vehicle-free days could produce some negative outcomes from a long-term perspective. A predictable challenge is that those who rely on private vehicles for commuting may be dissatisfied when public transportation fails to provide them with equivalent comfort and convenience by being overcrowded, lacking coverage, or charging too much, but a more important issue can be the influence on businesses, which will be less productive as a result of such policy. A typical example can be supermarkets, which sell fresh food on their shelves. Banning trucks and lorries on certain days may mean that they could not ensure sufficient supply or provide delivery service as usual.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while there are theoretical benefits, the vehicle-free days may result in a less active city on those days and hurt the local economy in practice while leaving the existing pollution and traffic problems still unsolved.
