Introduction

It is argued that there is no point of teaching children how to write by hands in this contemporary era. Personally, I somewhat disagree with this idea because handwriting skills are of significance to children’s early childhood education and motor skills, although the development of electronic devices seems to reduce the necessity of children gaining such skills.

Body Paragraph 1

Handwriting skills play a crucial role in the education of young children. Handwriting drives growth across several cognitive areas—one of the largest areas being phonics. In order to write a word, children must be able to sound it out and connect those sounds to written letters. This, in turn, helps with reading abilities. As writing becomes more automatic, children will build grammar skills, and understand how words are connected to each another in a sentence.

Body Paragraph 2

Additionally, children can also have a good motor control. When starting to learn, children may have difficulty holding a pencil and putting it to paper. By spending more time practising, it is very likely that they can establish penmanship, which will be translated into better motor planning and fine motor dexterity.

Body Paragraph 3

However, the fact that modern technologies are advancing rapidly makes it unnecessary to teach children handwriting skills. Young children’s acquisition of computer skills from using electronic devices enables them to perform tasks such as taking notes electronically. When it comes to communication, they can send e-mails by keying in the words promptly, or directly speak out the information which can then be displayed on the screen. Obviously, compared with the period when that convenience was not provided, handwriting skills are not that important.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I partially concur with the viewpoint that children ought to be taught handwriting skills. The reason for this is that handwriting skills can not only be beneficial to children’s early childhood learning, but also exert positive influences on their motor skills. However, I admit that due to the convenience that modern electronic machines can bring, children should not be forced to learn to write by hands.
